ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Neighbors have been promised the Winrock Town Center Park for years. Monday, KRQE News 13 learned the expected 2018 completion date has been pushed back.
Last year, developers said they'd hoped to complete the project as early as 2018 or as late as 2019. However, shoppers said that was a far-fetched ambition.
"I don't see that, that's not even close. Maybe 2020, 2021," Johann Snyder said.
Darin Sand, Vice President of Development with the Goodman Realty Group, said 2018 wasn't likely.
According to the city, there have been some obstacles that have slowed down development. It didn't get into specifics.
Despite that, it said it's pleased with the results. Some shoppers agree.
"Every six weeks I get off at Louisiana, I glance over and I say 'Oh, a new store,'" Valerie Davis said.
The group bought Winrock in 2007. For years there have been big ambitions for overhauling the mall. Current plans include a man-made lake surrounded by fountains, cafes, even a grand hotel.
Some shoppers said that's difficult to imagine with what's there now.
"You have another strip mall but it's outside so that makes it different," Snyder said
Shoppers said however long it takes, they're hoping it looks something like the video.
"I definitely think it's nothing like I've ever seen before, especially not in New Mexico," Sydney Romero said.
Goodman Realty Group could not say when the project would be complete.
The lake, park, hotel and condos are still part of the plans. The giant scuba tank and climbing wall are as well. However, the developer could not say when shoppers can expect those attractions.
