ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A woman crossing Lomas Boulevard NE against a Don't Walk sign is in critical condition after being run over by a University of New Mexico bus, police are reporting.
About 45 minutes later another pedestrian suffered dangerous injuries in a collision in a residential neighborhood.
According to police the UNM bus running routes between parking lots and campus destinations was southbound on Yale Boulevard at about 1:20 p.m. and was turning east on Lomas Boulevard on a green arrow. UNM student Sharon Broome, 58, entered the crosswalk, fell down when she made contact with the side of the bus and was run over, an APD spokesman said.
Police said the back wheels of the bus passed over Broome's legs inflicting serious injuries. She was last reported to be in surgery.
Lomas was closed at Yale Boulevard while the Albuquerque Police Department team that specializes in documenting fatal accidents completed its investigation. That unit is often called out to document crashes involving serious injuries that don't result in fatalities.
In the second collision about 45 minutes police initially planned to call out the fatality team due to the severity of the injuries incurred by the pedestrian hit at Rhode Island Avenue SE at Trumbull. However, the callout was canceled on word from the hospital that the victim's condition had stabilized.
Additional details on the second incident are not yet available.
