ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Adam Alvarez, the target of Sunday's church attack , is recovering in the hospital Monday night after a four-hour surgery from wounds to his shoulder, arm and wrist.
Police say 24-year-old Lawrence Capener rushed the St. Jude Thaddeus church choir director at the end of Sunday's Mass.
"He told me he wanted me to die," Alvarez said. "Suddenly I saw this man run up next to me and start slashing at me."
Witnesses say Capener stabbed Alvarez and then two others who subdued him: off-duty firefighter Greg Aragon and church musician Gerald Madrid.
"I'm starting to take him down and that's when I felt some real hard blows to my back which I thought were punches. I thought they were punches - turns out it was a knife," Madrid said.
A criminal complaint says Capener told detectives he believed Alavarez was a Mason involved in a widespread conspiracy.
As for the other victims, police say Capener apologized for hurting them, saying he decided to stab them because he wasn't sure if there were also Masons.
Alvarez says he doesn't know Capener or why he gave the story he did.
"I just want to go on record saying, I am not a mason. From what I understand, the Masons are honorable gentleman," Alvarez said. "They have a very secret society but it's all to the betterment of mankind."
Capener remains in custody on a $250,000 cash or surety bond.
