ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - An attempt at not one, but two ballooning records has fallen short.
The unmanned solar balloon called the "Jon Magnus" launched from Balloon Fiesta Park on Wednesday morning.
The goal was to get the balloon to 100,000 feet, qualifying it as the highest hot air balloon flight ever.
Because of its special make up, it would have also qualified as the highest solar balloon flight.
Unfortunately, the balloon only made it a quarter of the way before landing.
The team's leader Daniel Bowman said on Twitter that severe turbulence was to blame, but added the team would attempt to break the record again next year based on lessons learned from this flight.
