Albuquerque man wants to clean up streets and reputation

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M (KRQE) - An Albuquerque man born and raised in the International District is trying to clean up his neighborhood's streets and reputation.

"I figure if we clean up its appearance, you know, maybe everybody won't look at it as such a bad place because there are a lot of good people around here," said Lawrence Howard.

Howard is in between construction jobs and about a week ago came up with the idea to use the little construction equipment he owns to make a difference.

"I made some flyers and passed them out to all the businesses around town," said Howard.

The flyers are headlined with "Power Washing for our Community." Howard is offering to power wash any business, park or part of town, in return for a small donation. However, he says he's not keeping any of the donation money.

"There's a lot of homeless people around here and they're always at the [Wilson] park. So, I figured I could use the donation money to throw a barbecue at the park so everybody could just get something to eat," said Howard.

Howard's services have only been on the market for about a week, but businesses are already excited to get a spot on his schedule. His first customer was "Y Mart" on Gibson and San Mateo.

"He's trying to do a good thing. I like him, what he's doing, to clean and keep the neighborhood clean," said Frank Abed, the manager at Y Mart.

Howard thinks once his neighbors see they're living in a cleaner place, they will be inspired to help keep it clean.

"If it's looking better, you know, then more people will start, I don't know, taking care of themselves better. There won't always be a whole bunch of trash floating around the neighborhood," said Howard.
