AUSTIN (KXAN) - There are plenty of underfunded classrooms throughout the world, but one YouTube subscriber shows a genius option for some science labs.
The video walks you through converting your smartphone into a digital microscope, all for the cost of about $10 and in just 20 minutes.
It’s so high-powered it’s capable of snapping shots of cells.
The post says the setup is a viable substitute for underfunded classrooms that otherwise wouldn't be able to do experiments requiring a microscope.
"You're not restricted to a laboratory setting with this microscope -- designed to be easy-to-operate, lightweight and portable," said the creator in the video. "I'm a major proponent of making home science more accessible. My goal in designing and building this phone-to-microscope conversion stand is to provide an alternative to overly expensive microscopes."
All the materials you need are plywood, Plexiglas, a cheap laser pointer, some nuts, bolts and washers. The only tool you'll need is a drill with a couple bits -- and perhaps some pliers.
The end result is deeper than the device itself: "More than that, this device will allow people to rediscover the world around them," said the device's creator.
