ISTANBUL (AP) — A Syrian opposition figure says the Syrian ambassdor to Iraq has defected.

The opposition figure says the ambassador, Nawaf Fares, is believed to be on his way to seek asylum in Turkey. If confirmed, it would mark one of the highest level defections in the 16-month-old uprising.

Khaled Khoja, a member of the opposition Syrian National Council, said Wednesday that it is "certain that Fares has defected." He says his information came from his own sources on the ground in Syria.

There was no other immediate confirmation of the defection.
