Trial set for Alabama man in bride's honeymoon death

Watson already has pleaded guilty in Australia

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama man was in court Monday to stand trial for the death of his newlywed bride during a honeymoon diving trip in Australia.

Gabe Watson arrived at the courthouse in Birmingham with his current wife. He didn't talk to reporters before going inside.

Circuit Judge Tommy Nail is set to consider several legal questions before beginning jury selection for Watson's capital murder trial.

Nail refused the defense's attempt to subpoena former Alabama Attorney General Troy King. Watson's lawyers argued that King pursued the case for political gain, but Nail ruled the claims are irrelevant to the murder charge.

Watson is accused of drowning his first wife, Tina Thomas Watson, during a scuba dive in Australia in 2003. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter there and served prison time.

The defense says the woman died in an accident. Prosecutors claim Watson drowned her for insurance money.
