Kansas City, MO - It's a meerkat mystery at the Kansas City Zoo.
Authorities now say it appears a zoo visitor *stole* one of the African animals.
"It is very unfortunate -- now we're going to have to go out and figure out a way to idiot-proof the meerkat exhibit to keep idiots out of there."
The once-missing meerkat is now back safe in his zoo habitat. Zookeepers noticed it was missing back on November fourth.
At first, they guessed a hawk may have snatched it up. But they realized someone had stolen the little animal when the meerkat was found in a covered aquarium, abandoned outside a local pet store.
Investigators lifted fingerprints from the aquarium to help find the meerkat bandit. Zoo officials say they will have to alter the exhibit to protect meerkats from other would-be thieves.
