MESA, Ariz. (CNN/KNXV) - A suspected thief thought he could get a steal on gas but got burned.
He caught himself and his truck on fire, then crashed into a nearby home.
The man is seen rolling on the ground trying to put out the flames consuming his shirt. Investigators said it's his own fault, though. They said he was trying to steal gasoline by siphoning it with a motorized pump.
"He was all burnt up,” said Mitch Drum, who chased after the man.
Drum is the neighbor who actually chased after the suspected thief on fire. Even though he didn't catch the crook, his camera caught the crime.
“You can see the guy on my video surveillance,” said Drum.
You can see the thief jump out of the burning truck and then take off. The driverless vehicle then crashes into another home, torching the garage.
"And he gets up and runs off,” said Drum.
Police caught the unnamed suspect. He's in the hospital with burns and is expected to survive.
