Glitter, netting, fake blood can all bring a Halloween costume together. But it isn’t complete without the most important accessory: The Trick-or-Treat bag.

Although it’s main purpose is strictly as a vehicle for moving those sweet treats from around the neighborhood back to your house, it’s even better when you can make it part of an awesome costume.

Save some money this year and gather up some old t-shirts, your sewing kit and some glitter and glue and make your very own personalized Trick-or-Treat bag.

This is a great project year-round, and also works for reusable grocery bags and even cute totes or purses.

  • Sewing machine or sewing kit

Flatten out a T-shirt onto a clean, smooth surface.

Use your circle pattern folded in half. Place onto T-shirt with the rounded side facing the bottom hem. Trace around and cut out the half circle. This is the opening for the bag.

Cut off the sleeves, leaving the seam at the shoulder on the tee. This will ensure your straps are strong. If you have a plain tee or want to use the design on the front, then turn it inside out and re-flatten. If you want to create a blank bag, leave as is.

Place straight pins along the bottom hem about a half inch from the edge.

Place on your sewing machine and sew straight across. Turn inside out again and you’ve got a brand-new tote!

To decorate, place a piece of cardboard inside the bag where you want to decorate.

You’ll now be able to glue, paint and decorate without it seeping through to the other side.

We have a piece of cardboard shaped like a T-shirt handy for whenever the kids want to spruce up old T-shirts.

You can also decorate and then follow the bag-making instructions.

To add handles, wrap ribbon or other material, like felt, around the handles.
