(CNN) - Happy birthday, Twitter.

Five years ago, the first of what would become many billions of "tweets" was posted the microblogging website. It was just two words: "inviting coworkers."

Since that March 21st, 2006 tweet by founder Jack Dorsey, Twitter has grown to more than 175 million registered users sharing their ideas -- in 140 characters or less.

According to Twitter's official blog, users post a billion tweets every week. It took more than three years for Twitter to reach its first billion milestone.

Just last week, Twitter says it set a record of 6,939 tweets per second immediately after the 9.0 earthquake struck Japan. 177 million tweets went out as the day wore on.

The site now averages 140 million tweets a day.
