Winter storm brings snow, cold to NM

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Parts of New Mexico are getting a lot of snow and it is much needed.
    
However, the winter weather's making driving a bit tricky, with crashes all around the state and in Albuquerque.
    
Right now it is still very wet outside. Things are starting to clear up, but it is cold and icy.
    
The snow definitely made for some scary crashes. One woman slid off Tramway just before nine Monday morning.
    
It happened just south of Spain. The driver slid on the slick roads and dropped more than 20 feet into the Bear Canyon arroyo.
    
Rescue crews were called out, but we're told the woman was not hurt and surprisingly did not roll her car.
    
The Northeast Heights is seeing most of the snow so far.
    
They have accumulated about an inch and side streets are slick and at last check it is still snowing in the East Mountains.
    
Driving there is also difficult and there is about three inches of snow on the ground.
    
Drivers in Rio Rancho are also taking things slow. Sidewalks and side streets there got a dusting of moisture.
    
Farther south, Belen got just a bit of snow but enough to make the ground white. So far no accidents have been reported there. 
    
With temperatures dropping way below freezing Monday night, people out on the roads celebrating the New Year are reminded to be extra careful.
    
Santa Fe is also getting hit. So far they've seen three inches Monday.

This snow is great news for ski areas all over the state, especially with a lot of people hitting the slopes for the holidays.
    
In Santa Fe, the mountains there have already picked up an extra seven inches of powder.
    
The Sandia Ski Area also got about two inches of snow. It's coming at a great time because it's still trying to open up the whole mountain. Just a few of the lifts and runs and the base are open now.

Ski Apache was another area that was hurting at the beginning of the ski season, but it was busy Monday morning with the slopes getting an extra six inches of snow in the last 24 hours.
