CORRALES, NM (KRQE) - It's going to be a tough night for firefighters battling a Bosque fire near Albuquerque.

The Romero fire has been burning away from Corrales but winds Wednesday night could change the direction of the fire pushing it towards homes.

  • No evacuation orders at this time - However, some roads in the area remain close where the fire is active so some areas may not be accessible due to safety reasons.

The Romero fire started about 3:30 pm on the Westside in Corrales and then jumped to the eastside of the river  The eastside is the most active part of this fire.

There was no lightning Wednesday so official are saying this fire was human-caused but they don't know how yet.

The total estimated of the Romero fire is roughly 288 acres, but a GPS mapping has not been completed yet.

Fire activity has lessened as the fire is laying down with the cool of the evening setting in. However, crews are anticipating a shift in winds overnight, which could cause the fire to pick up somewhat. Smoke will be present and low to the ground overnight.

Crews continue to build containment lines utilizing bulldozers and burnouts where possible. Air resources have finished work for the evening.

Officials say about 60 to 70 acres have burned near Sandia pueblo.

There is a large gas line just on the other side of highway 313 and firefighters are working to keep the flames from jumping the highway and burning on top of that gas line which is their main concern.

Sandia Lakes Recreation area and two homes have been evacuated so far.

The fire is zero percent contained on the east side - on the westside the fire is 80-percent contained and there are no evacuations.  The westside has burned close to 6 acres.

Winds are expected to shift and which means the flames could be pushed in the direction of the Village of Corrales.

Firefighters on the westside are working to make sure the line they have created will hold if the fire does shift back
