ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Tom Udall is in New Mexico to get a firsthand look at the scars left behind by two massive wildfires that burned through parts of the state last summer.
The New Mexico Democrat is stopping Tuesday at the Spur Ranch in western New Mexico. That's where last year's Wallow Fire crossed over from Arizona.
On Saturday, he will get a tour of the work being done on areas affected by the Las Conchas blaze on Santa Clara Pueblo land.
Pueblo Gov. Walter Dasheno says his community is at the mercy of the monsoon season. One heavy rain could cause severe flooding through the charred canyons.
The Las Conchas Fire burned more than 16,000 acres of tribal land and destroyed much of the pueblo's watershed when the burned areas flooded last August.
