SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Santa Fe County officials are considering asking voters in November to approve a quarter-cent tax increase to fund firefighting operations.
The county had the tax in effect for 24 years before it expired in 2008 and voters balked when asked to recommit in 2009.
Officials believe the tax would provide a long-term funding source for firefighting operations and equipment and add about 25 cents to the price of each $100 worth of goods or services purchased in the unincorporated parts of the county.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that the County Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to publish a summary of the proposed ordinance imposing a fire excise tax.
If the ordinance is passed in July and approved by voters in November, it could take effect in January 2013.
