LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (KRQE) - Investigators are focusing on a power line running through the Jemez Mountains as a possible source for the forest fire threatening Los Alamos.

The Las Conchas Fire started Sunday afternoon on private property near the Las Conchas Campground about midway between Los Alamos and Jemez Springs.

On Tuesday Los Alamos Fire County Fire Chief Doug Tucker offered the first definite information about how it may have started.

"It's our understanding witnesses said it started on a power line," Tucker said. "When I flew it the second day it looked like that was the point of origin, and there were power lines in it.

”That's under investigation, but that's what it looks like."
