CAPITAN, N.M. (AP) - State, local and federal firefighters are battling a wind-driven grass fire that broke out east of the town of Capitan.
New Mexico State Forestry spokesman Dan Ware says the fire broke out on private land about 4 miles east of the town in Lincoln County at about 4 p.m. Sunday. The blaze quickly grew to more than 100 acres.
No evacuations have been ordered and no structures are threatened.
The flames are being driven by wind gusts as high as 40 mph. A heavy air tanker has been requested to help about two dozen firefighters on the ground.
