RUIDOSO, N.M. (KRQE) - Bonito Lake north of Ruidoso is no longer viable as a drinking water source for the city of Alamogordo after flooding from the Little Bear Fire filled it with silt and ash.
The lake, known as a fishing and camping retreat, now reportedly has the odor of charred trees and rotting fish in the air.
A public works project manager for Ruidoso says it will take several years to fix the problems.
The Little Bear Fire, started by a lightning strike on June 4, burned more than 44,000 acres of mostly timbered mountainside before firefighters got the upper hand early in July.
