SANTA FE (KRQE) - The Santa Fe National Forest is planning to start controlled burning Monday on more than 1,000 acres in an area northwest of Española.

The burn on about 200 acres a day is intended to reduce fire fuels and improve forest health, according to a statement from the Forest Service.

Fires will be lit only when conditions are favorable, the statement added.

Smoke is expected to be visible from Ghost Ranch, Canjilón, El Rito, Coyote, Youngsvile, Abiquiú and Española and will settle into low-lying areas overnight but lift again by mid morning.
