CORRALES, N.M. (KRQE) - Crews are now just monitoring hot spots in the Romero Fire that burned hundreds of acres on both sides of the Rio Grande north of Albuquerque.
Firefighters caught a great break overnight as the winds were calm at the fire.
East winds that whipped out of the canyon did not make it far north and gave firefighters the chance to get a hold of the blaze that started on the west side of the river near Corrales Wednesday around 3 p.m.
Approximately 359 acres have burned.
After starting on the west side of the river, it quickly jumped to the east side toward the Sandia Pueblo.
Dozers built containment lines Wednesday night and Thursday.
Crews also worked to wet hot spots they were afraid would flare up.
There Romero fire is 50 percent contained.
No homes were burnt by the blaze. Fire officials say about 40 structures are threatened, but the structures are not in immediate danger.
"Be ready but things can happen quickly, but the likely hood is probably low based on the fire behavior we are seeing now, but these Bosque fire are very deceptive,” Lann Moore said.
Firefighters tell me one of the biggest concerns Thursday is a flare up on the east side blowing back over the west side near Corrales.
There is a strong presence on both sides to keep a close eye on embers that might go air born.
Highway 313 is closed to the public on the east side of the river so fire crews can get in and out of the area.
