Fire teams stop blaze in Manzanos
80 responders, air crews worked on containment

MANZANO, N.M. (KRQE) - Firefighters launched a large and fast assault Wednesday on a fire that popped up in the Manzano Mountains.
The North Fire was spotted around 7 a.m., and quickly drew 80 firefighters on the ground backed by planes and helicopters dropping retardant and water.
At last report the fire had spread to 11.5 acres on private land 1.5 miles west of the community of Manzano in Torrance County.
There is no word yet on how the fire started.
By early afternoon the fire was not making any major runs, according to a statement from the U.S. Forest Service.
Winds were a challenge, however, as the westerlies were flowing at 10-15 mph and expected to increase to 10-20 mph overnight.
Late in the afternoon the fire teams reported they had stopped the fire from spreading although a containment figure for the extent of fire lines was not available.
New Mexico State Forestry was expected to assume command of the firefighting effort during the afternoon or evening.
Firefighters planned to be on the scene overnight.
