SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Emergency management officials are offering New Mexicans tips about avoiding flash floods.
The state Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management says people in flash flood warning areas should immediately seek high ground if they're on foot.
People also should not walk through moving water.
Emergency managers also say drivers should not cross low areas when water is flowing because it takes only 6 inches of rushing water to sweep away a vehicle.
People also should be careful of streams, drainage channels, canyons and arroyos because flash floods can occur in those areas even if it's not raining on them.
