Driver possibly to blame in fatal crash

Pedestrian not using crosswalk

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Lots of questions are still unanswered in an early morning fatal pedestrian crash.

Police say it appears the victim was not using a crosswalk, but it also appears the driver was at fault too and possibly drunk.

According to police, the crash happened at Coors and Paseo del Norte in the northbound lanes just before 6 o’clock Tuesday morning when it was still dark

Police say the man, who was killed, was crossing the street from east to west on Coors.

The driver that hit the pedestrian told police he did not see the man in the roadway before hitting him.

We still do not know the identity of the man or the identity of the driver.

Police say they are investigating whether he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but won't say if there was any indication of that on scene.

“It wasn't a rush hour scenario but because it was dark and because the pedestrian was not crossing using a designated crosswalk, we believe those could be contributing factors as to why the driver struck him,” Officer Tasia Martinez said.

The speed limit there is 45, but it's unclear whether the driver in this case was speeding.

Crews have cleaned up the crash scene, but the investigation continues.

At this point the driver has not been charged with any crime.
