ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A police officer and a second driver both escaped injury in a nearly head-on collision on Interstate 40 late Tuesday afternoon.
Albuquerque Police Department Officer Pete Romero was headed west on I-40 after spending the day in court on DWI cases.
About 200 yards west of the exit to Unser Boulevard NW he spotted a vehicle coming across the media at him and despite swerving was unable to avoid the crash.
The eastbound driver told investigating officers a semi changing lanes forced him into the median.
The crash, which happened shortly before 5 p.m., totaled both vehicles. Romero was driving one of the department's new Dodge cruisers.
The investigation is still in progress, and there are no reports of citations being issued.
