Baillio's refunds nearly $115,000

Deal customers thought was too good to be true

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A locally-owned chain of electronic stores is paying up big-time for what seemed like a long shot: refunds for customers if the opening kickoff return in the first or second half during the Super Bowl ended with a touchdown.

Baillio’s offered a deal most customers thought was too good to be true. Now, the store's paying out more than $100,000 in refunds.

"We're pretty excited about it. It's fun to see people win."

Baillio's president Rob Kujath admits the store went out on a limb, offering up full refunds on certain TVs and bedding if a first or second half kickoff was returned for a touchdown in last night's Super Bowl.

Now, 76 lucky customers are getting their money back because it happened.

ESPN reports it was just the ninth time in Super Bowl history, putting Baillio’s on the hook for nearly $100,000 worth of purchases.

"We had a party here with a group of people, and I was just thrilled to see the kickoff run back for all those people,” Kujath says.

Maybe not quite as thrilled as Don and Liz McGuire.

“At about the 50-yard line, we realized he was going to make it,” Don says.

They were among those lucky customers watching the Super Bowl, not expecting they would get their money back for the TV they bought to watch the big game.

"I turned to my girlfriend on the couch before that happened and said, ‘Evidently this probably never happens,’ and I turned back and watched the touchdown,” Liz says.

The McGuires got their new $1,000 47-inch TV free.

Baillio’s is thankful for the insurance coverage that's paying for the refunds.

“It was $100,000 worth of coverage, and we spent it all. Lots of fans get excited and it's great to give the money back,” Kujath says.

Baillo's actually had two promotions surrounding the Super Bowl.

It is also giving out another $15,000 in refunds for customers who predicted a Ravens Super Bowl win earlier in the season.

Baillio’s is now in the process of contacting all the winners.

Customers will have to wait anywhere between two weeks to 30 days before they can get their money back.
