ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - In arguably the toughest district in the state, the Sandia Matadors are hoping to grab the bull by the horns.

Sandia returns 12 starters from last year's squad. Seven starters will rejoin the offense while five return to the defense.

"You know we have a lot of excitement. We don't have a lot of depth at some key positions, but we do have some returning starters that we're excited about," Kevin Barker said.

The Matadors were 6-6 last season, but proved strong in district play with a 3-1 record.

Sandia players are fueled by the motto "Win the Day."

"Win the day, it means you know every practice every play and giving it your all," Senior Carlos Mora said.

They open the season against St. Pius X.
