RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) - Friday at the Rio Rancho High School baseball complex was a lot more than America's pastime and hot dogs.

A signing ceremony was held for a pair of Rams players that are heading to the University of New Mexico to play baseball.

"A lot of the guys I played with on summer teams," pitcher Alex Wehner said about his signing choice. "It's always good to know the guys you're playing with."

"It's the best choice out of all the schools I talked to," added outfielder Devon Conley. "Coach (Ray) Birmingham seems to be a real good coach, and I'm looking forward to being a Lobo."

Then the day turned to something really different: the first-ever wedding was held at home plate of the Rio Rancho High baseball stadium.

Jeremy Worthen and Kara Thompson, both 2004 RRHS graduates, met while going to school and competing for the Rams. Worthen played baseball and Thompson played track.

They became husband and wife in a 15-minute ceremony.

"I told her, and she was all for it," Worthen said. "You know, best high school facility in the state and I figured, why not?

"I played here; love this place."

More rings were exchanged at the ballpark than those by the new Mr. and Mrs. Worthen. Earlier in the day, the Rams baseball team received its state championship rings.

All in a not-so-normal day for Rams baseball coach Ron Murphy.

"I don't know if I can top this," said Murphy. "Today tops it all.

"State championships rings, two Lobos, a wedding on the field. I'm happy. I don't need to top this."
