ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The St. Pius X boys' soccer team is at the top of its district and is the KRQE team of the week.
The Sartans are 16-4 overall this season and 6-0 in district play.
Pius' season took a huge turn for the better on a California road trip. The Sartans won two games, but lost a game to Sacramento Jesuit, the 6th-ranked team in the nation, 1-0.
The loss was close, and the Pius confidence grew.
"It was incredibly valuable, and I think maybe more for our confidence," Sartan Head Coach Mike Strati said. "Sacramento Jesuit came out last year and was the No. 1 team in the country for most of the year and gave us a pretty good whooping at 5-1, which we're not used to.
"And we were told they were playing this year significantly better then last year, and for us to only lose 1-0 and be competitive was a great confidence booster for the guys."
The Sartans now head into another state tournament next week as the favorites to win the 4A state title.
