ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The Great Southwest Track & Field Classic started with national decathlon champion Curtis Beach seeking a threepeat in the decathlon.
Beach started on fire winning the first four events: the 100 with a time of 11.05; the long jump at 23 feet 7 inches; and then with a jump of 23-7. Beach has also won the shot put and long jump. He has 3230 points after four events. That pace is 16 points better than his national record. Beach says it would be special to be able to break his national record at home.
Beach is competing in 13 events to get both high school and international scores. The international scores will help him qualify for the U.S. National championships in July.
