THE PIT (KRQE) - The La Cueva Bears are atop 5A again after another bracket busting run through the state tournament.
Seeding in the sixth position, they had to drop the top three seeds to claim the crown. They did just that.
Saturday night, La Cueva denied Mayfield their first ever title by winning 61-53.
The Trojans exploded to an early lead and things seemed to be going their way.
Ronnie Daniels, however, had no intention of giving up the state title.
Daniels did it all for the Bears Saturday. He drove inside, he shot 3s, he made great passes and was smothering on defense.
The junior point guard would finish the game with 18 points and six assists.
Late in the fourth, La Cueva separated from Mayfield with strong defense and stout shooting.
This is the second straight title for the Bears. Last year, they topped Highland to take the crown.
Mayfield is now 0-3 in state championship games.
