ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - This weekend many impressive athletes competed in the State wrestling championships. One young wrestler from Moriarty stood out as an inspiration to all.
Moriarty's Andrew Bird made it to the state tournament for the first time ever. A big accomplishment for any high school athlete, but especially for one born without hands or feet.
"Since he was a baby, Bird's found ways to adapt,"" Moriarty head coach Dennis Friedland commented. "He has regular shoes cut off and fixed to his specifications.
He's also an athlete beyond the mats. Bird can throw a football 40 yards, and shoots the basketball well too."
Bird lost his opening match, but did win in the consolation quarterfinals, before losing in the semi-finals.
So while he did not win a state championship , Andrew Bird will adapt and be okay, just like he always has.
