Ramirez buzz intensifies as clock ticks

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The media circus has begun for the Albuquerque Isotopes and their temporary teammate, Manny Ramirez.

National media outlets including ESPN and MLB.com have arrived in Albuquerque to cover Ramirez's expected four-day stint with the Isotopes.

He's finishing a 50-game suspension from the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Isotopes' major-league affiliate, for using performance-enhancing drugs.

While national sports reporters converge on the Duke City, Isotopes staff are getting everything finished for the expected packed house. Only tickets to the Isotopes' grass berm behind right field were still available Tuesday for that night's game.

Ticket-buyers will have extra time this week: the box office opens at 8 a.m. each day and closes during the seventh inning.

Some fans were excited for the chance to see a big-league player in action.

"This is huge because, if you're in the Dodger organization, you're getting the top players, that when they have to come back down for an assignment, for whatever the reason is, it attracts a big crowd here in Albuquerque," said George Ramirez, who is not related to the player.

Others were less happy with Ramirez, but still excited to see the game.

"I think he's a cheater myself, but he's still a superstar no matter what, and get an opportunity to see him here in your hometown," said Celina Bussey.

Berm tickets went on sale at noon Tuesday for Wednesday night's game. Regular tickets are available for Thursday's and Friday's games.

The four-game series Ramirez is playing in is against the Nashville Sounds.

Gates for Tuesday's game will open at 5:30, a bit earlier than usual. The first pitch is at 7:05.
