New Mexico State and former Rio Rancho High golfer Tim Madigan is off to a solid start in defense of his Albuquerque City Mens Golf Championship.

Friday at Ladera Golf Course, Madigan shot an opening round 2-under-par 70 to become part of a six-way tie atop a crowded leaderboard in the 2009 city championship.  Sharing the lead with Madigan are Alex Estrada, Ethan Fine, James Gehrke, Michael Alesio and Richard Price III.

Four golfers are tied one shot back at 1-under par 71, including University of New Mexico golfer Brandon Putnam, who came with just a few feet of an eagle on the 18th hole.

Former Albuquerque Academy golfer Elliot Feng and former Sandia golfer Justin Knauber are part of a four-way tie, two shots off the pace at even-par 72.  Knauber will play golf for New Mexico State this fall.

Round two of the city championship will take place Saturday at Ladera Golf Course.  The third and final round is set for Sunday at Los Altos Golf Course.
