ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The fight that was dubbed "Bad Blood" from the get go, turned into an odd spectacle when the challenger's blood turned cold and she bolted.
Promoters scrambled and snatched up an audience member to fight in the challenger's place.
Melissa "the Hurricane" Hernandez called World Boxing Champion Holly Holm a rabbit, but in the end it was Hernandez who turned tail and ran.
Hernandez promised to let the fists fly in several media appearances before a scheduled fight against Holm on Friday.
"Friday night you are going to see fireworks," Hernandez said during a prefight interview. "You have the tall the person versus the small person. I'm going to be bringing the fight the whole night. Let see what the tall Holly's got–excuses."
However, the Hernandez camp said they wanted to see Holm wrap her hands with tape before she put on gloves.
It's something their allowed to ask for. But they didn't show up and then cried foul.
"You know with the way they were acting, it was almost like they were trying to make an excuse from the beginning," Holm said.
Fight promoter Lenny Fresquez said Hernandez's team said they might return to the fight for a bigger cut of the pie.
"They tried to say well, we'll fight if you pay us more money," Fresquez said. "They tried to strong arm me and I wouldn't go for that."
Fresquez found an opponent for Holm in the audience. No. 13 ranked Victoria Cisneros got out her seat, donned another fighter's trunks and got in the ring.
"I was here in the audience. I paid to watch the girls. I love boxing, this ain't nothing to me," Cisneros said.
Holm won in a unanimous decision, but Cisneros went the distance in a fight she knew about minutes before the first bell.
"To be honest with you I knew flat out it was going to be a better fight...because Holly was going to knock out Melissa in five or six rounds anyway. So this was a much, much better fight," Fresquez said.
Holm also said she was impressed with her opponent.
"Really it was more a pleasure with Victoria Cisneros, she represents what women's boxing is really. I know you hear Melissa Hernandez say 'I am women's boxing,' she really is an embarrassment," Holm said.
Fresquez said that they intend to ask for Hernandez to be suspended from boxing.
Hernandez was unavailable for comment because she had already left the building.
