DETROIT (AP) — The Columbus Blue Jackets rallied to beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 last night. Vinny Prospal scored with 24.7 seconds left, capping the comeback. Damien Brunner and Valtteri Filppula scored in the first 2-plus minutes of the game to put the Red Wings ahead by two, a cushion they wasted for a third time during their five-game losing streak.
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds have blocked ace Johnny Cueto from pitching for the Dominican Republic in next month's World Baseball Classic. Cueto strained his right oblique eight pitches into last October's division series against San Francisco. Because he finished the year with an injury, the Reds had the right to block him from playing in the WBC.
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Second baseman Brandon Phillips likes the chance to bat lower in the Cincinnati Reds' lineup. Phillips has been Cincinnati's most versatile hitter, moving from spot to spot whenever there's been an injury. He's also wound up batting first a lot because the Reds haven't had a proven leadoff hitter.
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Cleveland Indians All-Star closer Chris Perez is promising to keep quiet. Perez was embroiled in controversy most of last season, when he knocked Cleveland fans for not supporting the team, criticized ownership for not spending money and irritated some opposing teams with gestures on the field. Perez says he won't be a distraction this season.
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — The family of American Hockey League left wing Wade MacLeod says the Springfield Falcons player has a benign tumor and is awaiting treatment. The announcement comes just days after MacLeod suffered a seizure on the ice after a hit while playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets' affiliate.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Shabazz Napier scored 11 of his 27 points in overtime as Connecticut beat Cincinnati 73-66 last night in college men's basketball. Sean Kilpatrick had 13 of his 18 points after halftime and JaQuon Parker added 14 for Cincinnati, which lost for the fourth time in five games.
OLEAN, N.Y. (AP) — In college women's basketball, Number 14 Dayton held off St. Bonaventure 67-63 in an Atlantic 10 Conference game. Andrea Hoover scored 13 points and Ally Malott had 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead Dayton to victory.
