PHOENIX (AP) — Cleveland left fielder Michael Brantley needed stitches in his left forearm after being spiked yesterday during the Indians' 14-10 win over the Oakland Athletics. Brantley was spiked by third baseman Josh Donaldson in a play that ended the third inning.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds beat the split-squad Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 yesterday. Joey Votto hit a two-run homer, in an encouraging sign that he's progressing in his recovery from knee surgery that robbed him of his power last season.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled defenseman Cody Goloubef from their American Hockey League affiliate in Springfield, Massachusetts, and have reassigned forward Sean Collins to the same club. The 23-year-old Goloubef scored his first career NHL goal in a 6-2 home win over San Jose on February 11th. He played in five games with the Blue Jackets.

PHILIPPI, W.Va. (AP) — A West Virginia middle school football coach facing budget cuts is planning a 172-mile walk to Ohio to raise money. The Exponent Telegram in Clarksburg reports Nick Mayle hopes to raise $50,000 by July. He's buying three pairs of shoes for the trek to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, during spring break.
