NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Luol Deng scored 20 points last night as the Chicago Bulls topped the New Orleans Hornets 96-87. Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah added double-doubles for the Bulls, who took the lead for good late in the first quarter. Eric Gordon led the Hornets with 20 points.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 in a shootout last night to match the NHL record for season-opening point streak. Patrick Kane and Andrew Shaw lit the lamp for the Blackhawks in the shootout. Marian Hossa scored twice before exiting the game after Vancouver winger Jannik Hansen hit him in the back of the head.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Antti Niemi made 25 saves last night to lead the San Jose Sharks past the St. Louis Blues 2-1. Joe Thornton and Tim Kennedy scored for the Sharks, who snapped a seven-game winless streak. Patrik Berglund netted the Blues only goal.

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Chicago Cubs starter Matt Garza is expected to miss one week with a side muscle injury. Garza was hurt Sunday while throwing live batting practice. He underwent an MRI on Monday, which revealed a "mild strain" in his side.
