VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Kyle Chipchura scored twice and Mike Smith made 29 saves last night as the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-2. Antoine Vermette (AN'-twahn vuhr-MEHT') and Mikkel Boedker (mih-KEHL' BAHD'-kur) each added a goal and an assist for Phoenix, which was coming off back-to-back losses to Edmonton and Calgary over the weekend. Jason Garrison and Henrik Sedin (seh-DEEN') replied for Vancouver, which got 18 saves from Cory Schneider.
PHOENIX (AP) — Marcin Gortat (MAHR'-chin GOHR'-tot) hit big shots at the end of regulation and overtime, helping the Phoenix Suns end a three-game losing streak with an 84-83 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves last night. Gortat hit a runner with 13 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime and scored on a hard drive with 45 seconds left in the extra period. Gortat, Johnson and Markieff Morris had 14 points apiece, and Jermaine O'Neal added 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Suns.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Josh Hamilton went 0 for 3 in his Cactus League debut with the Los Angeles Angels, playing five innings in their 7-7 tie with an Arizona Diamondbacks split squad yesterday. Hamilton grounded out on the first pitch he faced and later flied out twice for the Angels, who signed him a five-year, $125 million free-agent deal to leave Texas for its AL West rivals. Gerardo Parra hit a two-run homer and Rod Barajas (bah-RAH'-hahs) added a fourth-inning solo shot for the Diamondbacks.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Jason Kubel, Adam Eaton and Cliff Pennington each hit two-run homers and a split squad of Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Oakland Athletics 9-4 yesterday. A's starter A.J. Griffin was sharp in his spring debut. The right-hander, who came up from the minors to go 7-1 with a 3.06 ERA in 15 starts and help the A's win the AL West last season, gave up one hit and struck out three in two scoreless innings. Josh Collmenter started and pitched two scoreless innings in his spring debut for Arizona, giving up a hit and striking out two. He is projected to be the team's long-inning reliever and a spot starter.
