PHOENIX (AP) — The Celtics are out west to face the Phoenix Suns tonight with the team dealing neither Kevin Garnett nor Paul Pierce at the league trade deadline yesterday. The Celtics did pick up guard Jordan Crawford from the Wizards and he could be in uniform for Boston tonight.
BOSTON (AP) — NBA teams were unsuccessful in prying away Celtics star Kevin Garnett before yesterday's trade deadline, including the L.A. Clippers. The Clippers' Chris Paul let Garnett know he could make a deal there happen but the Boston Herald reports Garnett stood firm in wanting to stay in Boston.
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Red Sox DH David Ortiz agrees with manager John Farrell's assessment that just a couple weeks of game action in spring training should have him ready for Opening Day. Ortiz is recovering from an Achilles tendon injury and tells WEEI the Red Sox don't want to rush him but he wants to be ready for Opening Day. Boston plays the Rays tomorrow.
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli is progressing well with indications he will make his Grapefruit League debut by the end of next week. Manager John Farrell says the Sox hope to get Napoli running on the base paths Sunday, saying he feels "very good physically."
LONDON (AP) — Boston and other top marathons around the world have implemented new anti-doping penalties covering elite runners. The races can now suspend payment to athletes and demand re-payment of prize and appearance money and bonuses from athletes found guilty of doping offenses.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Patriots right tackle Sebastian Vollmer has undergone an arthroscopic procedure on one of his knees, according to the Boston Herald. Vollmer had knee and back issues much of last season but missed just one game. He is poised to become a free agent, although ESPN has reported the Patriots are set to make Vollmer an offer.
HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) — Number-one Quinnipiac hosts 13th-ranked Yale tonight in men's hockey action. The Bobcats already have the regular season ECAC title locked up after a Yale loss last weekend. In other games tonight, number-5 New Hampshire travels to Vermont, 12th-ranked UMass-Lowell faces number 15 Boston University and 19th-ranked Dartmouth is at Clarkson.
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) — Former Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine will become athletic director at Sacred Heart. The university says Valentine's appointment to succeed the retiring Don Cook will be announced formally next Tuesday. Valentine's a Stamford native and last month signed on to co-host a weekday talk show for NBC Sports Radio.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Harvard product Matt Birk has decided to go out on top, announcing his retirement from the Baltimore Ravens after this month's Super Bowl win. A sixth-round draft pick in 1998, the center played 11 seasons in Minnesota before four more in Baltimore -- going to six Pro Bowls.
