GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — As Glendale inched closer to a deal that would bring the Arizona Cardinals' training camp to the Phoenix suburb, Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff indicates it is resigned to losing the NFL team. ABC15 Sports in Phoenix reports the Cardinals would build a practice bubble encompassing 1 1/2 football fields to stage workouts out of the searing summer heat. Glendale City Council members were briefed on the proposed deal yesterday. The Cards' contract with NAU expired in 2012.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Yovani Gallardo and seven other pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout to help Mexico beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 1-0 last night. Humberto Cota drove in Luis Garcia with a line single to right in the fifth off Brad Ziegler for the only run. Gallardo struck out Adam Eaton swinging and Cliff Pennington looking, walked two batters and caught Eric Chavez looking to end his only inning. Arizona starter Ian Kennedy gave up two hits with a walk in three innings, striking out three.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The U.S. team played to a 4-4 tie with the Chicago White Sox yesterday in the first of its two exhibition games leading up to the start of the World Baseball Classic. It was still a losing day for the Americans. First baseman Mark Teixeira (teh-SHEHR'-uh) will miss the tournament after straining his right forearm while swinging in the batting cage before the game. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said in Tampa, Fla., that X-rays on Teixeira's hand and wrist area came back negative.

PHOENIX (AP) — Michael Saunders homered and Justin Morneau (mohr-NOH') drew a bases-loaded walk, helping Canada beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-4 yesterday in a prep game ahead of the World Baseball Classic. Tyson Gillies and Cale Iorg had RBI singles for Canada in a four-run eighth off loser Michael Gonzalez. Left fielder Adam Loewen jumped against the wall to take away an extra-base hit from Josh Prince with two on and two outs. Saunders homered off Wily Peralta in the fourth.

PHOENIX (AP) — Jed Lowrie had two hits that including an RBI double and Yoenis Cespedes (yoh-EHN'-ehs SEHS'-peh-dehs) drove in a pair of runs to help the Oakland Athletics beat Italy 4-3 yesterday in an exhibition ahead of the World Baseball Classic. The Chicago Cubs' Anthony Rizzo homered in the fourth for Italy, which opens the WBC's first round tomorrow against Mexico. Minnesota minor leaguer Chris Colabello also homered and Washington farmhand Mike Constanzo added an RBI double.

PHOENIX (AP) — The Oakland Athletics will move their spring training camp to nearby Mesa starting in 2015, agreeing to a 20-year deal following approval from the Mesa City Council. The Chicago Cubs are moving out of HohoKam Park to a new facility in Mesa next spring, and the A's will assume control of HohoKam Park and Fitch Park after their lease with Phoenix expires in December 2014. Oakland trained in Mesa for a decade, at Rendezvous Park from 1969-76 and then at HohoKam from 1977-78.
