New Mexico turns away UCONN

Albuquerque (KRQE) - The 21st ranked University of Connecticut Huskies had plans to get a second Paradise Jam Basketball Tournament title in St. Thomas Virgin Islands but, unranked New Mexico played spoiler, beating the Huskies 66 to 60 to take the tournament title. Four Lobos scored in double figures led by Kendall Williams 15 points. He also had 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals to go along with the points. Shabazz Napier led the Huskies with a game high 23 points in a losing effort. The Lobos led by 30 to 27 at the break. That quickly turned into a ten point 39 to 29 advantage in the second half. The Huskies fought back and even took a one point lead late in the game. The Lobos regained the lead and went on a 9 to nothing run to close out the game. Lobos point guard Hugh Greenwood put the Lobos up for good, at 56 to 55, when he buried three of his 12 points in the closing minutes. Greenwood also pulled down a team high 7 rebounds. Lobos seven footer, Alex Kirk, had ten points and 4 rebounds in the win. Reigning Mountain West co player of the week, Tony Snell, scored 11 points. The Lobo's were 100 percent from the free-throw line and made it 21 of 21. With the victory the Lobos improved to 4-0, handing the Huskies their first loss of the season.
