Lobos, new coach win big

28,405 people at game to see it

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - It's time to savor the win. A big win.

The UNM Football team beat Southern University, Saturday, 66-21.

More fans were there to see the win than any game at University Stadium since the Rocky Long-era in 2008.

Lobo fans stuck around after the game for a performance by Southern University's world famous marching band, but even that wasn't as entertaining as watching the UNM Football team score first and score often.

"I want to see how Bob Davie does his first year coaching. I like the attitude. I like seeing the enthusiasm with the players. It's going to be a good season," said Lobo fan Stewart Case.

Many other fans were thinking the same thing. Approximately 28,405 people came to the game to watch the new head coach lead the squad. That is almost double the attendance of the last home game in 2011.

Bob Davie was hired this year after three consecutive one-win-seasons.

After beating the Southern University Jaguars by 45 points, Davie already put on a show that the fans, even the Mayor of Albuquerque, seemed to appreciate.

"I think Coach Davie brought a new level to the football team here for the Lobos," said Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry, who was in attendance.

Things will be especially tough next week. That's when they play 15th ranked University of Texas in Texas.

The next home game is against 24th ranked Boise State the last weekend of September.

Sixty-six points is the most the team has scored in one game since 2008.
