Lobo football win boosts enthusiasm

For crowd attendance and sales of Lobo gear

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - It's the start to a football season that Lobo football fans can howl about and it was a win for UNM.

The team dominated over the Southern University Jaguars last Saturday.  The win is now leading to the anticipation of filling up the stands in Lobo Stadium again and Lobo gear vendors selling more merchandise.

The old saying in New Mexico is that "everyone is a Lobo," but there hasn't been much to cheer about in the last three losing seasons for football. Although with a new season and new coach, many are saying they can see the program taking a new direction.

"I think it shows a lot of promise," says Lobo fan Chad Monthan. "Just the discipline that the team had, reading about it in the paper as far as the number of points they were able to put on the board."

Points on the board could also mean money in the bank for UNM Athletics. They have been suffering in terms of a lack of income brought in by football fans. Although about 28,000 Lobo fans showed up for Saturday's game. More performances like that one could also be good news for Lobo apparel dealers.

"We're going to make sure there's enough out there for the fans to get," says Harvey Kreitman from Lobo gear store New Mexico Look. "If there's continued success, we'll probably add more, but we do have a good supply of football gear for now."

New Mexico Look has been no stranger to demand for Lobo gear in good times and bad. However, with the mild flood of fans that came in over the weekend, store managers said they heard a lot of excitement. A lot of that coming from five of the nine touchdowns being scored by freshmen and even a 98-yard touchdown from a kickoff return.

The Lobo football team will get their next challenge this Saturday as they take on the Texas Longhorns in Texas.
