Fans have hope for Lobo football

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The latest college football rankings are out and the Lobos are in second to last place. According to Sports-Rating.com , they are ranked 123rd out of 124 college football teams.

Despite the rating, there is hope this season that was not there the last several seasons.

The Lobos have a lot to look forward to with a new coach, a new field,and a new clean slate to start the season.

The team needs to work harder than ever because they have just one win a season over the last three years.

"I'm really excited about the new coach. I'm really excited to win some games this year," said a UNM tour guide showing freshmen the campus.

Coach Bob Davie comes to UNM from ESPN where he was a commentator. Before that he was Head Coach for Notre Dame.

Fans say any change will be better compared to the last three years under former coach Mike Locksley's dismal 3-33 record.

"I think with the new coach we'll do a little better, you never know," said freshman James Griffin.

While the incoming freshmen are cruising their new stomping grounds the football team will be coming home to a new one too.

The field at University Stadium is now called Branch Field and is complete with new turf. It's expected to be ready for the home opener against Southern University on September 1st.

So far, the UNM athletics office says almost 10,000 season tickets have been sold. That's more tickets than this time last year. Is it a sign that Lobo fans are regaining hope?

"It's about school pride, New Mexico pride, we've got to make sure we have a strong showing this year," said incoming freshman Elijah Candelario.

Regardless of how the Lobos do, incoming freshmen are ready to cheer along.

While the Lobos rank 123 out of 124, the New Mexico State Aggies are one spot ahead of them.

A factor that might affect attendance during the upcoming season is ticket prices. Prices for some tickets have gone up by as much as $5 a game.
