ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Some fans could not wait for selection Sunday at The Pit and went straight to the Sunport Sunday afternoon to give the Lobos a warm welcome home.

Dozens of Lobo fans waited anxiously at the Sunport Sunday afternoon.

The Lobo men’s basketball team won the Mountain West Conference title in Las Vegas Saturday night against UNLV and fans wanted to be among the first in Albuquerque to congratulate them.

"That’s a fantastic win they had,” Lobo fan Delores Duran said. “We’ve been watching them all season long. We're excited. It's great for the community it's great for the University New Mexico and it's great for all the young athletes that look up to the lobos."

Lobos senior guard Jamal Fenton walked in with the championship trophy, Coach Steve Alford following close behind.

Fans wasted no time getting autographs, high-fiving the team and asking for pictures.

"They are an extremely good team so we have a lot of support for them," Lobo fan Jacob Spencer said.
