ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A discount on a hotel ballroom is the impermissible benefit and NCAA minor violation that caused Jamal Fenton to be suspended for three games.
Fenton held a birthday party at a hotel considered to be a representative of UNM interests. He rented a ballroom that normally goes for $800 for $500.
The discounted $300 off is what landed him in hot water.
A friend informed the hotel sales representative of Fenton’s status as a student athlete at UNM. That is when the representative said a discount could be available.
Fenton did not have any hand in the negotiation for the discount, but being a student athlete he just could not receive the benefit.
He has made a repayment of the $300 to a charity of his choice.
