Albuquerque (KRQE) - The speculation has already started on who will replace Mike Locksley as head football coach at the University of New Mexico. UNM Vice President of Athletics Paul Krebs says he wanted a coach who could recruit Texas and knew something about New Mexico. Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is someone who fits that description and is being mentioned as a top candidate. Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain's name has also come up. Mike Shultz was once a Lobo assistant and knows the state of Texas well. His name has also been mentioned by the those in the know as a possibility. Krebs said he will not comment on any possible candidates until one is selected. Krebs said the school will take it's time and do an exhaustive search. Defensive Coordinator George Barlow has been elevated to head coach after Locksley's firing. He will have 8 games to prove he belongs in the conversation. Krebs said if Barlow was successful, he would be considered for the job. Barlow said he would be interested.
