EUGENE, Oregon (KRQE) - It was bad—historically bad.
The No. 11 Oregon Ducks pummeled the New Mexico Lobos in every facet of the game en route to a historic 72-0 win on Saturday.
The 72 points tied the record for the most ever scored by at team at Auzten Stadium. The 72-point deficit was the fifth worst in school history. It's also the first time since 1964 that New Mexico has been shut out in a season opener.
Early in the game the Lobos showed some life when linebacker Joe Stoner stepped in front of a Duck pass for an easy pick. That was the Lobos high point of the contest.
Shortly after the pick, New Mexico botched a punt leading to the first of four first quarter Oregon touchdowns. Running back Kenjon Barner strolled through gaping holes in the New Mexico defense, piling up 98 yards and three touchdowns in that opening quarter.
The second quarter was no different for the Ducks. Barner gashed the Lobos for two long TDs and the Ducks found the end zone on two punt returns. All of that offense led to a 59-0 halftime lead for the Ducks.
In contrast, the Lobos' offense was simply anemic. While quarterback B.R. Holbrook was able find Ty Kirk on several occasions, he never got the Lobos in any sort of rhythm. The rushing game was worse, accounting for negative yardage at the half.
Oregon took out their first-team in the second half but still managed to notch 13 points on a tired and frustrated Lobo team.
