ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - It's definitely past Christmas, the self-imposed deadline Athletic Director McKinley Boston set for selecting a new Aggie head football coach.

The Aggies are now the last remaining Division 1 football team without a head coach now that Army today announced Cal Poly's Rich Ellerson as its new football general.

However Boston did tell KRQE News 13 his search is down to 3 candidates and that he'd make a recommendation to New Mexico State's president by this weekend.  However he added making that decision won' easy.

"We had great interviews in Phoenix this weekend, and I've got some great candidates to choose from," Boston said this week in Albuquerque. "In fact it's a very, very difficult decision."

Whoever is selected will inherit a troubled program from Hal Mumme who was fired at the end of last season with a year left on his contract. Mumme was 11-38 over four seasons and lost the last seven games of the 2008 campaign.
